It was at one of my lessons in August or early September 2003 that Mike first mentioned something about doing shows. We had been talking about how Jazz was becoming less accessible due to club closings and the cost of the ones still around. By this time Mike knew about my sound and tech experience. He said “Back in the 60’s we use to do these loft parties down in the village. Maybe we could get a loft down there and start having shows once a week. Would you do the sound?” I reminded him that NYC real estate prices had gone up a bit since the 60’s. He said “If I can find a place would you do it?” I thought about it for a second and I figured we’d do some shows and I’d meet some of the musicians around town. Again, underestimating the outcome of my decision, I said “Sure, why not?” A few weeks later Mike had a place. An intimate 140 seat theater in the village, The Baha’i Center at 53 East 11th St.
On January 6th, 2004 Mike, Dottie, me, Arnold J. Smith and Amanda Boatright opened the doors for the first time. Mike’s New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble opened the series. At that time none of us could have imagined still being there in our 17th season.
In those 17 season we produced close to 1000 shows. Mike recorded and released 4 live cd’s and has videos of many of his performances there on YouTube.
I have been so lucky to have met, worked with and become friends with, so many incredible musicians and Jazz icons. And the best part of it all has been standing next to Mike, show after show, and him saying things like, watch the bass players foot, listen to that hi hat rhythm. Or we would talk about Russ Kassoff’s beautiful arrangements or Cecilia Coleman’s deep groove.
A lot of people over the years asked why we never advertised. It was simple, we didn’t have the money. Aside from a small fee for the theater rental all money went to the band.
Mike always said “It’s about the music, the musicians and the audience.”
